About this blog
This page is a collection of historical depictions of Krähenbeißer (crow catchers). For copyright reasons, no more recent reproductions, such as those sometimes found in books about East Prussia or the Curonian Spit, are included.
Krähenbeisse.de is a Projektemacher.org blog.
About Krähenbeißer
“Krähenbeißer” was the name given to the fishermen of the Curonian Spit and the Curonian Lagoon who caught crows to pickle them as provisions for the winter. In the depictions made available here so far, you can see the baiting of the decoy crows, the waiting in the catching hut, the emptying of the nets and the bite. The name “Krähenbeißer” (or in the local dialect: Krajebieter) derives from the fact that the crows were bitten on the skull to kill them.

Todo
As always, there is room for improvement here as well; the following points will be addressed in the future:
- Historical texts should also be presented
- More depictions - the Google image search shows that more depictions exist; these should be acquired as analogue originals and digitised.

This site was generated with Hugo. It uses an adapted version of the Aether theme. The typefaces used are DS Behrensschrift for the headings and Nunito for the other elements.
The background is taken from the book “Niedersachsens Sagenborn”, edited by Karl Henniger and Johann von Harten, illustrated by Arnold Busch, published in 1907 by Verlag August Lax, Hildesheim. The template was recommended by the Antiquariat Pretzsch. If you are interested in historical endpapers, you can find a large selection there. The old background and more endpapers are available at Vorsatzpapiere.
The post-processing of the digitised material was done with ScanTailor Advanced.
OpenLayers is used for the presentation of the digitised material. The respective sections shown were generated with libvips.
The site is hosted by GitHub.
